Worum geht es im Projekt?

Sprachcafé

Our free weekly GSBTB Sprachcafé (or language café) offers a friendly, non-school setting to learn German, with the opportunity to sit together over tea and snacks, talk, make friends and find tandem partners. Watch your German level improve and don’t hesitate to bring your friends!

We meet Wednesdays from 5.30-7.30pm at Sharehaus Refugio in Neukölln (Lenaustraße 4., near U8 Schönleinstraße and U7/U8 Hermannplatz) We’re always looking for German native speakers and students at all levels. We’re also looking for people who want to be regularly involved with the organizing team.

Open English Café

Since November 2013 Give Someting Back to Berlin has been running a weekly English teaching group. The idea for the class was a wish from the refugee community we worked at that time who, due to the threat of not getting their asylum applications accepted, and not having been provided with German classes, felt that better English skills would increase their opportunities to establish themselves here, or possibly in other coutries.

With time the classes grew and people of various levels and reasons joined in. This included English literature academics from Iraq who wanted to keep their level of English from before they migrated, Japanese ladies who wanted to raise their communication skills, Syrian high school students who didn’t want to forget English while learning German, Eritreans needing an academic level of English in order to be accepted to university, and eager Afghans taking every opportunity to learn.

People of all backgrounds, nationalities and English language abilities are welcome to attend our free weekly Open English Cafe in Berlin:

Tuesdays at 6pm at Sharehaus Refugio in Neukölln (Lenaustraße 4, near U8 Schönleinstraße and U7/U8 Hermannplatz) We offer small group discussions in a form of informal conversational club. Our group includes newcomers, long-time residents and Berlin locals, and we’re always happy to welcome new participants. Come join us - there’s no need to sign up, just drop by!

Wie kannst Du helfen?

You can just show up to the classes - there’s no need to sign up. Or, if you like, you can email the German class ([email protected]). You can also email the English class ([email protected]), or follow them for updates on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/openenglishcafe).

Organisation

Give Something Back To Berlin e.V.

Give Something Back To Berlin is the largest project platform and network that makes social engagement and neighborhood work accessible to the large migrant population of Berlin. Our hundreds of volunteers come from over 60 countries, including the US, Sudan, Poland, Syria, Hong Kong, Israel and Brazil, with all different backgrounds and stories. Some are privileged enough to be able to work and travel anywhere they want. Others have refugee status and don’t even know if they can stay in the country. We call ourselves “50 shades of immigrants”, but the way we see it we are all neighbors, both in Berlin, and on this one planet. First and foremost, we are all people who want create change and positive outcomes on different societal challenges.
