Worum geht es im Projekt?

Africademics, founded in 2019, is a scholarship platform and community for students, early career researchers and young professionals in and from Africa. Through our Scholarship Ambassador Programme we aim to build a network of volunteers who support prospective scholarship applicants as advisors and mentors. This includes finding the right scholarship or fellowship, preparing application documents, and applying for scholarships and other opportunities. Through a self-paced online course, comprising virtual lectures, case studies and additional activities, volunteers are provided with the necessary tools and knowledge. The training, as well as the consultations with and support of scholarship seekers and applicants, take place online.

We also publish daily updates about scholarships, fellowships, training courses, career development and other academic opportunities. Over 30,000 followers and subscribers in Africa and beyond have joined the Africademics community since its foundation.

Wie kannst Du helfen?

Volunteers who are currently receiving a scholarship or have participated in a scholarship programme in the past can apply to become a Scholarship Ambasador for ‘their’ specific scholarship programme. They will then have the opportunity to share their experience, knowledge and tips with scholarship seekers who wish to apply for this particular scholarship. Volunteers also have the opportunity to join Africademics as general scholarship advisors and mentors, regardless of whether they have received a scholarship themselves. Volunteers will first participate in a self-paced online course which will equip them with the necessary tools and knowledge to advise and mentor scholarship seekers and applicants from African countries. They will then be matched with students, graduates or young professionals who are looking for support with their search for a scholarship, or with the application for a particular programme. The training, as well as the consultations with and support of scholarship seekers and applicants, take place online and is conducted exclusively in English (or, if applicable, French).

Organisation

Africademics, founded in 2019, is a scholarship platform and community for students, graduates, early career researchers and youth in and from Africa. We strive to make scholarships and funding opportunities more accessible and to enable more young Africans to pursue higher education. We publish daily updates about scholarships, fellowships, training courses, leadership academies and other opportunities on our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn pages, as well as on our WhatsApp and Telegram channels. Over 30,000 followers and subscribers in Africa and beyond have joined the Africademics community since its foundation. Africademics was founded by Lena Gronbach, a social entrepreneur and PhD student at the University of Cape Town. Having been supported by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation throughout her studies, Africademics is her way of giving back. In 2021 the organization was awarded the ‘weitergeben – Social Engagement’ prize by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and was selected as a finalist in the 2020/21 ‘startsocial’ programme.
